Lessons – Using Mobile Phones In Cars In New York
Do you need driving lessons it is not easy to stay focus on the road. We are all aware of the dangers that are faced when someone is driving whilst distracted. It can be anything that takes your concentration of the task of safe driving, for example; you may have a screaming infant in the back seat or a friend as a passenger who is talking loudly. You might be adjusting the radio station or have some loud music playing. All of these are distractions but there is one distraction above all of these that is most dangerous. It’s the little piece of sophistication that always seem to be magnetic to your hands, the mobile phone.
So why is it not a good idea to use mobile/cell phones in cars?
Just like the saying goes don’t drink and drive. Well its the same for mobile phones. Cell phones and driving do not go together. Using your cell phone while driving puts you and others in mortal peril.
Driving is a complex activity and we do this in an environment that is constantly changing. Despite the fact that we know the complexities involved in driving, we very often do it while doing additional activities as well. Sadly no matter how good we believe we are at driving, we cannot control the actions of other road users. It takes a fraction of a second for someone to make a mistake and if we are distracted by the use of a cell phone we won’t be able to react to that mistake like we could if we give the road our full attention.
It is a well-established fact that driving requires a fair amount of concentration, judgment, and precision. Impairment of any of these abilities can put you in grave danger. When you use a cell phone, your concentration is greatly shifted from the road.
The cell phone has become such a distraction in cars that it cannot stay down for two seconds. Dialling or even receiving a call can keep your sight off the road , albeit for a few seconds. In that short space of time there is a substantial increase in encountering a mishap. A car may decide to change lanes, or you may not notice a vehicle speeding towards you from the opposite end and collide head on with it.
Mobile phones and their use while driving is extremely dangerous and also illegal. In New York it has been made a criminal offence to use a cell phone or other handheld electronic devices while driving. Be guided by the following;
* You may not use any hand-held mobile telephone or send a text or an email while driving.
* If you use a hand held mobile telephone while driving you can receive a traffic ticket and pay a fine of $150 and surcharge.
* There are exceptional circumstances such as using your mobile telephone to call 911 or any emergency line.
Probationary drivers and those with learner permits will receive a suspension of the license or permit for 60 days, if the same driver recommits within six months will result in a revocation of their license for at least six months and a learner’s permit for at least 60 days. However a ban or those fines can only be effective if every driver acts responsibly, in which case it may not even be needed.
In the state of New York the law is spelt out clear, irrespective of whether your state laws prohibit you from using a cell phone while driving or not, it is the moral responsibility of every driver to ensure the safety of others on the road along with his own. It would be very difficult for NYPD and other officials to keep a watch on each and every driver. Needless to say , the legal implications, fines, or lengthy jurisdiction procedures cannot reverse the effects of a mishap, or bring back a lost life.
