New York Driving Lessons | Driving on Roads With No Street Lights
Driving at nights can be a nightmare but if you are cautious and careful you are sure to arrive at your destination particularly if you don’t have the proper New York driving lessons. The most significant difference between night driving and day driving is the difference in visibility. Ha! That sounds quite obvious, but when driving at night, your ability to see ahead, and the ability of other road users to see you, is very much reduced. When driving on roads with absolutely no street lights you will experience difficulty seeing information, also you will see colours appearing faded, edges become indistinct and there will be extra strain on your eyes.
So if you are going on a road trip and there are some areas you will be traversing that may not have any street lights keep in mind the following few tips;
Always keep your lights on
Its really important that you need to see where you are going, so proper lighting is important especially in areas where there are no street lights. Bear in mind that you need to use your main headlights, however having said that you must only use full beam headlights when you need to see further ahead. Do not forget that you are not the only one on the road ways so please always remember to turn off your main lights when another car is coming towards you or when someone is in front of you. Why? We all know the answer to that, if you are a driver, full beams can dazzle other road users and can throw you off track and create an accident or crash into another object.
Keep Your Eyes on Road Signs and Markings
Its quite important to familiarize yourself with the road and this in itself is not difficult. Follow the signs, follow the road markings, its for your benefit. Your lights will assist you to see those markings because they will not illuminate too far ahead of you, so you need to be constantly aware of where you are and what direction you need to take next. Always look ahead of you, look out for stray animals crossing the road, look out for objects that may create unnecessary stops or even the car ahead of you may brake suddenly or it could indicate a corner, or some other hazard ahead. Always be mindful.
Be careful When Overtaking
Overtaking is a major risk factor even when its not in the night. It can be a risky endeavor to do so when there are not street lighting because the visibility in front of you will be limited by the darkness.
You have bends to maneuver, pot holes etc. before you take action to over take ensure that the road ahead is clear and you can do this freely without creating any hazard for the next driver. Remember when you are same level with the vehicle you are overtaking make sure you switch your headlights quickly to full beam. If a driver overtakes you then keep your headlights on full beam until they are level with you. The extra light will help them overtake you safely. Once they pull past you turn you headlights to dim.
Use Full Beam Headlights in Total Darkness
If you are driving on roads that have no street lights or in total darkness and there are no other cars in front you, you should turn your headlights on full beam. Do not forget to turn back to dim if a pedestrian or cyclist is approaching you. Take note that the Highway Code states that you must not use any lights in a way that would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. Dazzling another driver is extremely dangerous and can cause accidents.
If you are having problems with visibility, slow down and drive at a speed that you are comfortable with. Also when you are driving towards corners and over brows, you should dim your lights so as an unexpected vehicle can see the road ahead.
It must be noted that one of the biggest issue with driving without street lamps is dazzling caused by other drivers coming unto you. It is extremely dangerous and can send you crashing. So drivers, be careful when driving in areas that have no street lights, drive carefully and remember you are not always on the road by yourself so drive carefully and drive to save a life.
